Rend v0.4 is out! (multiplayer support)


Over 2 months. That's how long it took me to implement networking for Rend. On multiple occasions I just wanted to give up, but somehow I made something that works.

However, this is not the "full" multiplayer support that I wanted get done. Bots were integrated in such an unfortunate way that they desync any multiplayer game. So for now, either play the game single with bots or with other people and no bots.

Also bear in mind that the protocol is quite pessimistic right now and will get some performance optimizations in the future.

In other news, a new map was added! It is called Shotgun Frenzy and as you've probably guessed, it is a buckshot challenge map.

Full changelog

Bugfixes:

  • Screenshots are no longer black
  • FPS now correctly reflects real-life performance

UX:

  • Added an option to show FPS
  • In-game score now shows offset from the first / second player's score

Gameplay:

  • Added a new 3-player map: "Shotgun Frenzy"
  • It is possible to play the game in online multiplayer!

Known Issues:

  • Playing multiplayer with bots tends to desync the game, so don't use bots in online multiplayer
  • Only play on local networks, preferably over LAN cable
